静止画圧縮の国際標準。

主にカラー静止画像の圧縮に用いられる。

もともとデジタル写真用に開発された。フルカラーのビットマップ画像対応。

非可逆圧縮方式で保存するためファイルサイズをかなり小さくできるが、画像を伸張して元の画像に戻したときに元の画質に戻らないという画質劣化は避けられない。

可逆プロセスを用いると完全に原画像を復元することができる。
